Large cent type 2? Date 1838?

I found this coin last month. It was unreadable. Took the SOS pad to it to identify it. I know it has no value before the SOS pad as now. I think it is a 1838 middle date. What does the group think. I am just glad to find a Large cent. Dont have a lot of them.Name: 1838lg1.jpg

You know what, I don't think you hurt it at all with the SOS pad! Looks fine to me. I don't know anything about the varieties since I only get 1 or 2 of these a year down here in Illinois.

According to my reference, the 1837 and 1839 had varieties of the coin, 1838 didn't. Still a great find!

Nice find. Even some here without using any harsh abrasives don't have the full liberty after a cleaning. Looks pretty well after cleaning, regardless what you used. I know there was something with an extra curly number in one of the series, but I think this is clearly an 1838.

Maybe in Wikipedia just shows there is no specific variety for the '38, but in the '39 you see there is a reference to the head of the '38 being on one. And the '39 often had the 'booby' head.
Future goals: Capped bust coin, Flowing hair LC, Classic head LC, VT copper, MA copper, Pistareen, Two-cent pc, SLQ, GW inaugural button, Excelsior button, Civil war token, and a gold ring.

    Definitely a 1838. Sweet find!
Like Daddydigger said we don't find those too often. I don't know the varieties either. If I'm lucky enough to find one I alway have to look it up to see what type it is. 😃
