Bardsley Bros and a small button

I was going through a jar of old finds and came across these pieces that I could use help in identifying.
The first piece has "manufactured By Bardsley Bros New York" on the front and the back is blank. The button has "chess" twice on the back and appears to have some type of material sandwiched between the inner and outer metal parts.
Any help with either is greatly appreciated.

del, thanks for the reply. A friend also gave me the same ID. And, the "chess" button is actually a "guess" one and very modern.
