Another 1st and stuck at 99

Desperately trying to find 1 more silver before the freeze comes and hit the Park I found the half dime at a couple of weeks back. It was a pretty uneventful hunt till I hit a very weak nickel signal. The signal was only about 15 feet from the half dime find. When I found the coin it was completely green like an old wheatie. Got it home and started to get it cleaned up and it turned out to be a Shield nickel (1st one) The reverse is decent but the obverse is pretty trashed. The best I can guess is 1868 but that is a big maybe. None the less it definitely is a Shield. Most of the wheats and the Rosie were found on previous hunts. Thanksgiving brings a couple of days of 40 temps so hopefully there is one more silver to be found. Wisconsin Digger

Good going! It's rare to find coins that old in out area. But considering the typical condition of other shield nickles I've seen dug, yours is in pretty amazing shape.

Congrats on the bucket lister! Hope you can get #100 yet this year. I'm sure I'll come short of that number unless I find a 20 silver spill.

I bet if you go try that new park you'll probably find 6 mercury dimes and a bunch of green wheaties. Just be sure to use the back gate. The front is locked!

1800s Nickel is not a common find.
