My first 1700's US Large Cent! 1798 Draped Bust!

Hi everyone. I got out with Dave Wise and Rick Yingling on Sunday for some cellar hole hunting. Danny LaMontagne gave us permission to hit a hole that he had never been to before but looked interesting. You just can't have a better friend than Danny. That turned out to be the best hole of the day. My wife bought me a Garrett AT Max with the wireless headphones and wireless pin-pointer for Christmas. It didn't take long to make one of my best finds ever. My very first target and first hole with the Max was a 1798 Draped Bust Large Cent! Before Sunday, my oldest US Copper was an 1803 Draped Bust. It's tough (in my opinion) to find the 1700's US coinage as you only have from 1793 - 1799 for years minted. Plus, it's in beautiful shape! Thank you Danny! You did an excellent job of cleaning that DB. Congrats on that find. Now...I know it was the AT Max virgin voyage but do you have an opinion it vs your other detector?

Most excellent Donnie and congrats! May your next DB be a 1799 - now that would really take the cake!

Interesting question. I have used several machines since I started 24 years ago. I currently own a Garrett AT Gold (along with the new Max) and a White's MXT Pro. In my opinion, the old White's XLT's and DFX's beat the MXT's hands down. What I don't like about the MXT is that it "blares" on rocks around cellar holes. It doesn't interfere with my ability to find a target but it's annoying.

I really like the Garrett AT Gold and the AT Max; however, in all reality, the Max is really just a tricked up Gold with a lower frequency (deeper) along with built in wireless headphones and a back light. Yes, Garrett finally arrived in the 21st Century and put a back light on their top of the line detectors. As I said, I like them BUT Garrett did not include the ability to lower iron volume into the background. I hunt with iron audio turned on. It's how I have hunted for 24 years. I like hearing the iron; however, some (most?) top of the line detectors like the Deus give you that ability. Garrett missed the boat on that one along with redesigning the known structural defects. Still, I can hear the targets "over" the iron but it would be nice if I could lower the volume on the iron.

I wanted one of the new Deus machines (ORX) but it was a Christmas gift from my wife and she didn't know I wanted a Deus. You can lower the volume on the iron in the background on the Deus.

I have also owned a CTX 3030 and GPX 4800 in the past. Talk about beasts!
