I got silver but not a coin

    Hey Diggers,
I went out with the guys to a new section of woods. We all found a few keepers and the weather was superb for detecting. Working my way up a hill near a natural spring I got a slamming signal next to a rotted log. I dug down about 3 inches and saw a flash of shiny silver. That is something I did not expect! At first I thought it was part of an old silver pencil or pen but then realized it's a cigarette holder. It's marked 900. So I guess it's coin silver???? Later I got a really nice early shoe buckle. It has the "cooking pot" chape which dates it to somewhere between 1660 and 1720. The iron tongue is of course rusted away. Funny how the entire buckle is bronze but the tongue was iron. Thanks for looking and happy hunting! Dave.

Great buckle Dave (you must have a very impressive collection by now ) , these buckles fall into the age from 1690 to 1720 from their "open chape" and single "tooth or tongue" . its a very nice example the iron insides are quite a bit stronger than the usual bronze ones . love it !

If I'd found it I'd have to take up smoking just so I could use the cigarette holder for a while. VERY cool relic. Hardly feel my finds are worthy after seeing what you're finding pal.

How old do you think the silver cigarette holder is? I wonder how long they've been using the .900 marking. It's a great find! I've never seen one posted before.

That buckle is really amazing! So old, and it's in wonderful condition.

Thanks Tony, I did some research and they have been making machine rolled cigarettes since 1880 but based on the Art Deco style I would guess this was made in the 1920's. It's a shame it got damaged. Maybe the owner threw it away because of that.

Two very nice finds. I have seen silver marked 800 and also stamped with the word "coin". Glad to see your posting cause now I have high expectations from you for this upcoming year...

I like that cigarette holder...don't think I have ever seen one that holds just a single cig. I have seen ones that are more of a small case that can hold a dozen cigs. Very cool.
Detectors I use: Minelab Equinox 900 & Manticore

I think this type of cigarette holder was used for smoking a cigarette, rather than as a container.
