    Hammered Copper Coin Surface Find

    Hey diggers,
I was detecting along an old medieval trail and got a screaming 83 signal (double-tapping). I kicked the leaves aside and re-scanned only to discover the signal had gone with the leaves. Normally this would probably be a bottle cap or some other modern trash but I decided to check it out with the pin pointer just to be safe. Boy am I glad I did! I moved the leaves aside and could see a little black coin on top of the ground. Once I got it home and cleaned it up I discovered it is a hammered copper coin minted in the City of Münster and dates 1600 to 1630! Here's a pic of it as I found it and also a pic of one that is not dug. The back of the coin says Münster Stadt (Münster City).

Really nice Dave! It's really cool to think that about every other time you dig a coin you must say - "Now I've never seen that one before!". I know the feeling of finding old coins on the surface. The best of my virgin fields last year had two coppers literally sticking out of the ground. Here's an 1803 Draped Bust LC in-situ. Plain nuts.

Wow, great surface find. What a story that coin could tell. Maybe it was a detector find lost twice. WD
