2 cannon balls near my house

    Hello diggers,
Russ and I went back to that forest near my house where the big battle happened in 1793. After about 2 hours of swinging I got a screamer signal that caused my machine to overload and null out. I kicked the leaves aside and could see the curved surface of a cannon ball just barely peeking out of the dirt! I just popped it up with my shovel as no digging was required. About 30 feet away I got another overload signal that sounded like a giant coffee can. I dug down about 8 inches and saw another cannon ball! They are both 6 pounders. I kept one and gave one to Russ. Here they are as I found them.

The battle happened in April 1793. The French were on one hilltop and the Prussians were about 1/2 mile away on a plateau. Hard to say if this was a fired Prussian ball or a dropped French one though. I've also found iron case shot and plenty of musket balls up there.

No worries John, they are solid iron. Believe me, if I found one with a fuse hole I would not bring it home! Well, maybe... but I wouldn't tell my wife.
