A Couple of Morning Hunts. Finally Some Old Stuff ( for Illinois )

Digger Don

Friday morning Noah got us a permission at a friends 1845 house. Obviously, we had high hopes for this property. Nothing super old, but I did manage an 1878 Indian Which brought a smile to my face.
I also dug 3 WC RR buttons. I was amazed how nice they cleaned up with a little CLR.

This Morning, we were invited by one of our local detecting friends to hit an 1870s permission he had set up.
He had hit it before with Hiluxyota so I wasn't expecting to find much. We spent the better part of five hours there. Very few signals except for these two beauties!!

I also dug this. I have no idea what it is. Has anyone ever seen something like this before? About the size of a penny.

Thanks for looking, Don

Don those are old finds anywhere! The 1878 IH sure cleaned up well and so did those buttons. Great job!

Lots of above average finds there, Don! An 1878 Indian Head has eluded me so far. That one is in nice shape with a beautiful patina.

Those buttons certainly did clean up nicely! What wonderful pieces of history! Wow!

And then, Holy Large Cent, Batman! I bet that one produced a screaming signal. Was it deep?

Last but not least is a very nice 1866 Shield Nickel with rays. That's one of the nicer Shield Nickels I've seen come out of the ground. They don't turn up often so a nice one like that is always a welcome find!

Congrats on the great digs! :clapping:

p.s. I have no idea what the last item is. It clearly says 8 oz. On it but I can't read the rest. Do you know what it says?

I have no idea either. its really crusty. i thought at first it was the top half of an old button, but now i'm leaning toward a cosmetic bottle cap. I really have no clue!!

I hope someone can help you out with the ID, Don. Super digging! :clapping: Boy, that nickel is in good shape for being so old! Those buttons!!!!:shocked03:

Great finds sir! I wish I could help you ID that last one. Hmmm.... Love all the coins and those buttons turned out great!

Turns out I may be able to help you ID that. From looking at Google, I could see in an older book that it is a 2 piece button for stock (animal) tagging from 1908. Sureh & Co. is the manufacturer and they were located in Chicago (so that makes sense). The only thing that is weird is the 8 oz. Maybe they had different weights for different ears of animals???
