Two+ Weeks From the Street Projects

I have spent quite a bit of time in the past couple of weeks scouring over blocks and blocks worth of old road base on two large road projects in old parts of the city. This can be some real tough digging! I didn’t come away with any old silver but did find some other interesting items that were dropped many years ago when horse and buggy last rode over these streets. Now it’s all covered with new road base gravel and soon concrete, buried again for generations. Not pictured are many, many pounds of scrap lead, brass and copper.

I'll let the pictures do the talking, but the highlights were: 1865 2 Cent, 1869 2 Cent and 1863 Our Army CWT.

Thanks! Unfortunately, the last part of this was covered over with base gravel as of today, it was a good run while it lasted. Good luck on getting out this fall!

Thank you! Not all street tearouts are productive in the street. Over the years I have learned when MDing in the street is a good idea and when not. It's hard to describe, but I know the old dirt when I see some tell tale signs that they made it down to the old road base. In the case of one of these projects, the stone curbing was still in place (put in circa 1910) and the street had never been torn up according to the city DPW plans, so it dated to the early 1880's.

Thanks! Of course, already have some permissions lined up, but we need rain before hitting those yards.
