Thread: Bear!

    Bear!

One of my owners showed me a pic of a bear from his deer cam. He said he showed it to a guy at Uconn who said it was the largest back bear he'd ever seen. Just yesterday a neighbor of mine got a large bear on vid (see pic).
Do you folks carry bear spray? Does it work? Any other tips.

I was out with Frank up in Goshen last year and we ran into a bear. I yelled Bear and it took off running. That got me thinking about I might need.

I do from time to time wack a tree with my shovel to make some noise to alert any bears that might be around.

I looked at spray but worried that it might blow back at me and I might mace myself, so skipped that.

Some hikers use bells on the backpacks to make sound.

Last year I saw a large one , he must of been hovering around the 300 lbs. mark and it was amazing how fast it could run . Be careful out there

Nice pic! There's been one wandering around my neck of the woods also. I've had a few close encounters with bears over the years ( 2 of them way too close for comfort), and I agree Dan, it is amazing and frightening how fast a bear can run!

I'd get a can of bear spray. It works on both bears and belligerant crackheads.

Nothing much more to tell, some guy covered a three sided barn hole with thin trees and tarps and there was chairs and things about, I heard him rustle in there and quickly took off. I didn't even see him, it could have been a lady but I'm guessing not.

In Alaska, we would have called that a cub or maybe a fat black lab! LOL. Reminds me of two guys out hiking and a grizzly starts to charge them. One hiker stops to put on his running shoes. The other hiker says "That's a waste of time. You cannot outrun a grizzly." The first guy says "I don't need to outrun the grizzly. I only need to outrun you."

No bears in my area so far, probably have to go a few hours away. Most areas in my state are too urbanized or open until you get to the North half of the state. But it's the people in my area you have to watch out for. Druggies, gang bangers, or worse-Karens!

Easy fix for this problem! Always hunt with a person who cant run as fast as you.

On a Black Bear "Bear Assault" brand bear spray will work, but you need to be within 30-feet of the bear which it can cover in 2.6-seconds. I've seen two black bears just outside Sleepy Hollow, NY, this year so far.

No problem with bears. Just be able to run faster than your detecting partner and you'll be just fine!
