    **UPDATE**CLEANED CT CIVIL WAR BUTTON

I tried the amonia bath repeatedly that was reccomended by another forum member Waterhead. it did do some improvement for this heavily green encrusted button but,not the result I had anticipated.
I decided to dig out the bottle of CLR and plopped it in. worked on it for about an hour and VOILA! looks a lot better now!

Real nice. Did you ever try lemon juice? It works for me, but it may need to soak a few hours.

You may want to see what color lemon juice turns the metal first. You don't want to get rid of the patina on it, just the green. If it turns it bright copper color, you may have to tone it with sulphur to get it back to a dark brown color. Maybe it just needs some more CLR to finish the job? It seemed to work great on it.

hey Dave i found an piece of info on what we were talking about pertaining to the button .

Button depicts state seal of Connecticut, grape vines with Latin inscription, He who transplanted continues to sustain, intended for officers of Connecticut units.

Anywhere from a 20 to 50 % mix with water. Then neutralize with a baking soda and water (paste) rub.
