    Using rare earth magnets

Has anyone ever used rare earth magnets to help clean out iron from a spot to see if it might be masking coins. I thought it would be alot easier to find the iron with the detector then instead of finding the square nails and small iron with a pinpointer just run a rare earth magnet through the dirt on a hand towel to pick up the small pieces. Does anyone know if the rare earth magnets will harm a detector? Was thinking this would be alot faster way to remove the square nails and small iron pieces.

I use them all the time when meteorite hunting. They won't harm your detector.

I also bolt one in the bottom of my beach scoops. Again, no harm to the detector.

    I buy mine here: http://www.kjmagnetics.com/
    Great service and good prices.
I've traveled a long way, and many of the roads weren't paved.

Thanks for the reply, it would be alot faster and very easy rather than having to pinpoint all the square nails and small bits of iron. This spot has alot of history and lots of people there at one time but part of the area has lots of iron infested spots. HH

Got one courtesy of Lowjiber I use in my beach scoop. Really helps when using the PI and all the bobby pins it picks up! 8)

Here's one I built using about 10 square magnets housed in aluminum siding. I use it mainly in old RR dump sites lookingfor date nails. Works great, picks things out of the dirt even. Steve in so az
