    '65 Quarter?

I have heard that the '65 Washington Quarter was a small amount of silver in it. My Uncle who is a big time coin collector is collecting '65 Quarters. Does anyone know of any truth to that?

A recent post by Milco showing a dug '65 surely doesn't look like a dug clad quarter (at least current composition anyways...).

    Re: '65 Quarter?

It does, I thought only the Kennedy Halves had silver in them after 1964.

Edit: I am not too sure about that...I just read that they made a few errors of the 65 quarter in 90% silver but they started cupronickel in 65 onward.

I did a tap tone between a 1969 and a 1967 quarter and they sound exactly the same..not to mention the clad looking edges...

The Kennedy half at 40% looks like a silver edge...

    Are you sure about that?

    Re: '65 Quarter?

For normal circulated coins--------In 1965 dimes and quarters went to the clad copper-nickel base, and the halfs were 40% silver dated 1965-1969.
The last 90% silver coins for normal circulation were dated 1964.
It is slightly possible a very small number of 90% silver blanks were accidentally mixed in with the clad blanks for dimes, quarters and halfs when they were striking the 1965 dated coins---but the mint was supposed to have melted all the 90% silver blanks so none would have been used.

Aside from the brief excitement that I had a ton of 40% silver quarters, its no big deal.

Thanks for answering the post regardless.

    And thank you too Dimeman.

Glad I could help.............you are only 1 year away from silver-------------if your finding 1965's---could be a few 1964's a little deeper in the same area. thumbsup01

I thought the half dollars went clad in 1972. Were half solid 40% from 64 to 72, then went clad?

    1964 half ... 90% silver
    1965-1969 half...40% silver
1970 - present for general circulation.... clad
coins made for not general circulation are proof sets and mint sets...some of these might have been taken out of the packaging and used.
I have read about some proof coins being found in coin roll searches.

That is correct---but the &quot mintmark were only available in collectable US Mint sets, and the S mintmark were only available in collectable US Proof sets-- no 1970 halfs were made to be used as circulated coins.
If you happen to find a 1970 JFK half, it was taken out of a mint set or proof set.

This thread started out as a quarter question.... 8/
