Fugios Cleaned

Last year I had picked up two 1787 Fugio Cents during an afternoon hunt and put them away until I could get to clean them up a bit. I finally got to them today. Both had thick crusted-on verdigris on the obverse side, making it difficult to clean and remove. The reverse of the coins held up better, though one of Fugios does have a break at the top, apparently resulting from someone's attempt to make a hole.

Here are a few photos of the Fugios after the cleaning. Now I just need to identify the varieties.

did you want a little help i.d-ing the varieties ?? or did you want to try to do it on your own?? if your brave enough theres a pretty good link to i.d. fugios in the YE OLDE RELIC HUNTERS GUIDE .

Thanks Dan. I do have over 100 photos of Fugio cents here I will be using to try to identify them, plus that link you provided will help too. But some assistance in identifying the variety would be great.

although this one here would normally be extremely easy to i.d. , the condition of the front makes it difficult but not impossible , but the reverse of the coin is pretty unique as well heres some tips to what to look at Angel . once you think you have the type down you can look at the one spot on the obverse to confirm it .

I think I may have identified one of the varieties. I'm not completely sure though. Anyway, below are better photos of the coin, as well as example photos of the variety, which are found at this website. The Coinfacts website too has additional information on the variety.

great job Angel , i concur with your identification on the 15-Y , that variety is usually a boldly struck coin with sharp features and is a relatively common one .i had one in the coinspill i found last year , remember?? that reverse is the only one with the eight pointed star on the label and the obverse die crack makes this coin stand out , if you look hard you can actually see the die break on the obverse that goes from the sundial out toward the rim (lower right side after the date and last cinquifoil). the next fugio won't be as easy to i.d. my friend lol lol

Thanks Drew. The cleaning was painstakingly slow since I was using a small brass brush to carefully pry off and remove the crusted-on verdigris. I did not use heated peroxide afterwards since it tends to darken the copper a bit, and it also removes the light green patina. I just rinsed off the loosened verdigris residue with water.

Wow Nice Coins ! It's rare to see so much detail from the Dug ones on the back where it says We Are One and States United or United States. You can even see th dots and Cinquefoils ( I think that's how it's spelled). Check out this GREAT Link On FUGIO CENTS.

Actually, I had forgotten about looking at the coin further. lol But it does look like it matches the Newman 16-N variety. I increased the size of the image I posted above 200% to compare. I also did a comparison with the images I have saved and it looks like a match there too, though the images I have are of the late die state variety, which began to show a die crack on the reverse at the 6:30 mark.

Wow ! Nice coins. I wish My FUGIO looked that good. I just want to clarify something I have learned about these coins when I researched mine . The symbols on the back, the star and the other symbol which I found out is actually called a Cinquefoil ( POINTED FLOWER ) . The star is 8 pointed while the Cinquefoil is 5 pointed . Coinfacts.com is a good site , but i have one I like better for Colonial Coins which is http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/
If the link doesn't work like that then just search for the site name called The Coins of Colonial and Early America . The site has so much info. and the Variety pics are awesome. The articles about the Various coins are great reading and i have learned alot.
We should be so grateful for those of us living in New England with all the private and Obsolete coins still being found .
Alot of Buttons also have these cinquefoils on the back as well .
