Are you doing something to make the crust come off, Drew, or is it flaking off on its own? It's looks like the details are going to remain sharp under the crust! That's awesome!

Tony most of the copper and brass items that are this old usually can take a week to really dry out and as the moisture is drawn out the compacted dirt will loosen and flake off . this would be the least invasive cleaning to do first , then you can see the metal's surface and form a plan on what next is again least invasive to do to clean it .
