Thread: 1781 1/2 Real

    1781 1/2 Real

Finally managed to get out for a few hours today
I found the usual trinkets and a VERY large musket ball drop...but the star of the show was this good looking 1781 (actually I'm not certain Carlos III was good looking at all ). What a great day to be out...perfect temps, soft ground....only problem is most of the place is still covered in snow...but I had some hunting areas. Thanks for looking!

That is a fine musket ball Drew, you should be proud to post it. Musket balls are like ox knobs.....they only disappoint because they trick you into thinking that there is a big fat juicy copper in the hole. If our metal detectors would indicate that the signal you just heard was a definite musket ball or a definite ox knob, we would be more than happy to dig them. That's my rant for the day.

Sweet R Drew. Great find.. or luck at least. Even sales of those coins, the better ones don't have detail like that. I agree, he was one ugly fella. Prob still had 10 wives.

Thanks, everyone! Jeff- that musket ball was a screamer at 4in and a solid 77 on my machine. I thought it was a shell casing. Buttons, IHs, occasional shotgun shells sound around 77. Coppers at 4in sound a perfect 89-90 on my machine. Coppers below 6-7in can ring up anywhere. Thanks!

I thought I'd just soak it in water until the dirt went away. Even toothbrushes put scratches on silver. What do you think Tony? You have much more silver experience that me.

I think that's a good plan. Definitely no toothbrush. Just let it soak and then rinse.
