need some relic hunting tips

I tried relic hunting for the first time and i had a hard time with it i didnt know if i should just dig every signal is there any tips or pointers you guys use. The ground was covered in scrap steel and old nails my machine was going crazy i have an AT pro and i had to turn the iron audio off because it was driving me nuts. I found one old buckle but other then that it was scrap and nails i was digging and there didnt seem to be any way of ID-ing them with my machine

The site i was hunting was an old ghost town. And i could tell some other Mders have been there recently by the fresh holes and disturbed dirt. But i was hoping to find some old buttons maybe some tools since it was an old lumber town. I did find a buckle which was pretty cool . I wasnt really sure what I'd find i kind of went this thing blindly. Every where i swung my coil it was driving me nuts the ground was alive with the scratchy sound of iron i wasnt sure what to dig

Carl it sounds like a very frustrating place to detect ...
i think the keys to successful results and keeping your sanity are these ,
1. finding a discriminating setting that will ignore most nails but pickup anything non-ferrous and larger iron.
2. using a smaller coil and going very slow can help in getting in between the iron
3. ( which is what i do) some machines have a very good tone id and by opening up the discrimination you in a sense hear everything and are able to pick out the good tones amongst the iron but it takes a lot of patience and to know your machine pretty well .

i have a smaller 5X8 DD coil and i treid to only dig the really solid tones i only discriminated up to 40 but there didnt seem to be any difference between trash and treasure. maybe ill give it another go next time i head up north the lake has always been good to me so if the ghost towns a bust again i can always hunt the water and with my wet suit only the freezing weather can deture me

I've only had my machine for a little over 6 months and my primary hunting grounds have been parks schools churches and lakes so this was my first time hunting an old home site i wasnt expecting so much junk iron ive gotten pretty good at coin shooting with my AT pro so i was accustom to those tones and signals here i didnt know what to do

Carl sometimes you have to improvise and come up with a different strategy for detecting different places and detecting out of your normal element can be very challenging. question = are these nails around where a building once was ?? i know on my machine there a level of discrimination i can set and the nails will break-up tone wise but the coins will still sound solid but the draw back is my depth is less and the deeper tagets will get caught in that range of break up. if i know theres good stuff there i really don't mind digging some of the better sounding iffy targets to get at them. sorry i can't help more
