I was able to get out for a bit Friday, conditions were better sunshine but cold, ground frozen in spots and spots muddy. Went to a field second time there found some relics but no coins did get a nice brass cattle tag. Decided to head back home and remembered a spot that I had not checked out before decided to give it 30 minutes and I am glad I did, I got an 1837 Large Cent!

Those last minute decisions are sometimes the best.
Congrats on the Large Cent

Very nice! I've never found a cattle tag. I didn't even know they existed. One more thing to put on my list

Nicely done Tony. I agree with Don. Sometimes those spur of the moment spots end up being your best finds of the week! Happy holidays and best wishes to you and Diane. Dave.

Two very cool finds! You don't see many double-holed coins found and that cattle tag is a rare find too. :congrats:

Two good finds. Any way to date cattle tags? Looks fairly old though. I'm still trying to figure out why the position of them two holes is the way it is? :thinkingabout:

Yes that puzzled me too, someone mentioned a whizzer on a posting but the holes seem a bit off for that and the ones I have seen the holes are normally closer together...just another mystery of which we come across so many of in this hobby!

Most whizzer holes do seem to be closer together, but I wouldn't rule it out. Nice find!
