Hello all.
I found this today at the old fairgrounds today but I don't have any idea what it might be. It is 1 3/4 inch by 1 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch deep. It appears to be copper with gilded interior. The lid is hinged. I didn't think too much when I found it but after looking closely it appears to be pretty old. Could it be a little snuff tin? The first photo is by a couple of tokens that I found for scale. The smaller token is dime sized.
Thanks in advance.
Ron
the color of the metal suggests to me it isn't very old as copper gets a green patina after many many years in the ground, it is definitely a cool piece with a great design. It could be a snuff box , could of it have been lost by a vendor at the fairgrounds ??

Most definitely dropped by a vendor. It was pretty much a surface find and feels like it has been waxed. There are antique sales at the fairgrounds every month at this site. It is pretty common to find areas where displays have spilled or folks have dropped items around the tables.

What is the pin that holds the pieces together made of? Put a magnet to the side of it and if it hits even a little it may be iron and not brass/copper. If it's iron and the hinge opened fairly easy, it's probably a newer piece. It almost looks like a new piece trying to be toned that old, rustic color. The wear pattern looks a little bit weird to me too.

Yeah I agree coinnut, the wear does look weird. Under the magnifier it seems uneven. Nothing is magnetic on it though but it most likely a fake. Oh well, I did manage to find 3 tokens and three wheats as well as the usual junk jewelry.

Very cool lookin "boxy" item, whatever it may be. I hunt on the local fairgrounds, but never have found anything more than clad and broken lightbulb bases and a few iron pins (the kind that hold heavy machinery together) (Hmm, assures me that I'll never ride the carny rides again!)

Looks like a snuff box to me. The wear is consistent IMO of being carried in a pocket for a long time. Great finds!

Could it be a postage stamp box ?

My guess would be a snuff box. Are those tokens Transit Tokens ?
