April 13th - I finally got out for a hunt on Sunday. Huge manicured field, it was like digging on a fairway. Anyways, dug (11) .69 musketballs, (4) small lead balls (not sure if they are buckshot or pistol) decorative button and a 1864 two center.
:shocked03: wow , 11 .69 caliber round ball , thats British brown bess material there Brian . you have to be close to an engagement , encampment or similar .what was the condition on the overall group of them (dropped , fired, smashed.)
congrats on the very sharp looking two center:smitten:

Very nice two cent piece . The only pile of round balls I find around here come from rabbits.
Congrats on your finds.

I agree. Way too many large caliber round ball in one location. If they are dropped, go out about 60 yards and see if you can find the impacted ones. Great 2 cent piece:clapping:

That pile of round balls about equals my total. Great hunting and I think that Del is onto something with that encampment idea. Hope you can get back there and keep us posted.

Dan, all the balls are drops and found in very close proximity to each other. three were in one hole. I think the old military road that ran along the Hudson is very close to the field that I was in.

Yeah, Dan, I thought you told me the fired ones would look mutilated. I was aware they were made of soft lead. But from the pic it looked like they were drops to me.
Great finds tho. The only battles I was aware of in CT were in State Parks, which are specifically two of the seven in the DEEP webstite it says you can't dig.

If a round ball hits a tree, rock or even bone, them you can see it is impacted. But some round ball are fired and don't hit anything that solid, and appear to be dropped, when in fact there is a trace of firing left on the ball.
