Hello All,

Good finds have been few and far between this year, but I found a real winner last night. This is a construction project that I have been going to for the past two weeks since they started.

I found a very rare 1876 shield style Milwaukee Dog License tag. It is about the size of a quarter.

I have found many others in the past, but only one other one from the 19th century, and that was an 1885 Minneapolis tag.

The 19th Century tags, as many of you know, are quite scarce and desirable, so we'll see about this one as I do more research and find out more info. I am trying to find out from the City of Milwaukee if they even have the records in their archives. I would love to find out who bought the license, what the dog was and where they lived, stay tuned.

I had no idea that they made those things way back then! Congrats! That has to be worth a decent amount to an avid collector.

I'm also surprised at the age. I never would have thought they licensed dogs back then. Great find! Looking forward to any new information you find.

WOW, awesome find! I personally haven't had much luck finding anything really old in the Milwaukee area so far as most everything seems to have been completely picked through since detectors came on the market, or else heavily landscaped where anything that might have been there was removed long ago. Last pic looks like someplace I know but can't place it. Congrats and HH!

Wow. The oldest I found was from 1916. Didn't know they had dog tags that far back... Nice find.

Rog, I believe the detecting and learning history coincides.... the RW was about taxation. But they just love to find MORE ways to tax now. State parks are now taxed. It's not a good nor a service and you are already paying to use a state (public) property... now it's taxed? Ridiculous!!!

It's about more then just a tax. A dog tag changes the legal standing of the dog. Without it, he is just another stray dog with no rights. With it, he is property. And the property owner is entitled to monetary compensation if the dog is wrongly killed.

Did a little research and I found The oldest known American dog license tag is an 1853 Corporation of Fredericksburg (Virginia) medallion, as quoted from "The Bark" in an article named "Collecting American Dog Tags". http://www.thebark.com/content/collecting-antique-dog-tags
I haven't been able to find anything about Milwaukee history, but it must be really close to being the first year issued.
