Tabs vs. Treasure

I have been using my newly upgraded V3i at a local freshwater beach. It is pretty worked over to the point that there is little left but pull tabs and bottle caps. So I am practicing on the tabs and gradually learning their signature on the search and pinpoint screens. Still not too sure about bottle caps.

So before my newly found confidence goes too far I would like to know how many of you have had a positive hit on a tab, with no other indication, and it turned out to be something good?

I once dug an 1841 half dime 6 inches deep that rang up like a pull-tab on my ACE 250. I haven't had that issue with my e-trac though.

I've had pull tabs ring up all over the scale depending on size, shape, and amount of damage.

Typically, an average complete pulltab will ring up just like a Flying Eagle Cent or a "Fatty" Indian Head Cent. (12-22 on my E-Trac.) The tab or "beaver tail" part of a pulltab often sounds like a nickel or gold ring. (12-13 on my E-Trac.)

Whether or not I dig these signals depends on two things:

1. What type of site I'm hunting. I typically ignore pulltab type signals in a park or school yard, but if I'm hunting a historic home site I would definitely dig.

2. How deep the signal is. I would probably dig every signal that is 5" deep or deeper. Those are less likely to be pulltabs unless the ground has been turned or fill dirt has been added.

I don't hunt beaches so I can't comment on that aspect of it.

Tony, I guess the E-Trak and ctx must read differently. Typical whole flat pulltabs ring up 12-19 almost every time. My fatty rang up 12-28. Big difference!

With my e-trac I have dug many war nickels that rang up 12-19! I wonder how they ring up on the CTX?

My war nickles rang up around 12-14 to 12-16 if I remember correctly. I know they weren't much different from regular nickles.

I've had many gold rings read exactly like a pull tab , although on my DFX they tend to jump a number or two with single signa-bars while most gold rings jump around less and often have a double or side by side signa-bar reading.

Ive heard that we dig 1500 pull tabs to every gold ring !!!! so i do tend to ignore ring pull signals and as a consequence i dig very little gold.

Pull tabs, especially beaver tails will show two different vdi's when sweeping from more then one direction. I believe this is because they are usually longer in one direction than the other. This is usually not true for rings.

Ive had too many pull tabs where the beaver tail if folded into the center of the pull ring. Those ring up the same in all directions. On the CTX they show up as a solid reading on the screen like a ring or coin does, not the raggedy red blob.
