Picked up a hardly used 11” coil for my Deus for a great price. Decided to give it a shot at one of my cellar hole sites that will soon be developed with houses. I was focusing on deep targets and dug a good bit of deep iron. But I did manage a couple of unusual finds. The first was this small brass case.

I could hear something rattling inside of it but I couldn’t open it. When I got home I had to peel back a corner of the case to reveal the object in side. It was this 1 inch tall bronze religious statue. Without too much work, Google revealed it is a Saint Anthony pocket shrine. I had never heard of such a thing.

The other unusual find took a bit longer to figure out. I thought I had dug a killer KG III halfpenny.

When I got home and started removing dirt from the reverse, I was left scratching my head wondering what the heck it was. Turns out it is an 1813 Half Stiver. I had never heard of such a thing. The reverse says “ Colonies of Essequebo & Demarary Token”. It is now part of Guyana.

Beats my 55 Belgium 50 centime coin found yesterday. I have never seen either of the two pieces you found before.

Thanks Gents!
A little research shows that those KG III Stivers get dug up now and then. Our comrades in Canada seem to find them a bit more often then us here in the states.
Saint Anthony is supposed to be the patron Saint of lost objects. It's a bit ironic someone lost a Saint Anthony object ;)

Boy that's a heck of a start with the new coil. Very nice

The little statue was deep Todd and I missed it on many previous hunts at this site, but the KG Token wasn't all that deep. It was surrounded by a couple pieces of iron. I think it just hit it from the right angle this time.

Pretty unique find with that pocket shrine. Grats on the half stiver. I hadn't hear of either as well. The front does look almost the same as a KG3. Prob we do tend to forget that England and Spain used to rule a bunch of different places back in the 17 and 1800s... and they would have a monetary system with the same ruler.

Most excellent finds Jeff! That's about as good a copper as you can expect to dig for sure. It would be interesting to see who "T.W." is (initials below the bust). Perhaps the coin designer? Congrats.

Love the coin but the pocket shrine is awesome. I'd carry that on all of your hunts for now on for good luck.
I agree with The Rebel. I'd carry it with me. After all, it's a fun memento.
With all the iron and junk, I'd be tempted to dig out all the dirt and sift it through a screen! :congrats:

Nice finds as usual Jeff and congrats on the 11 inch coil acquisition , I remember George finding a pocket shrine before with some religious figure inside (it might have been St. Anthony) . The coin is in exceptional shape and a very sweet find !:clapping:

now there is a thought .
