civil war type spoon

anyone know what kind of metal was used and if they were a particular shape , i found a really old spoon but i can't post it right now.

Not sue here. pewter maybe.. most of the guys cut off the handle , so they could be carried easier

well Jim its hard to tell much from that picture :rolleyes: , most spoons have a maker's mark on the back right in the middle and that will give the best indicator of the age . if it doesn't have one then composition and shape are your next best at determining the era. yours although it hard to tell looks like it has some reddish areas on the metal (possibley from a copper composition) is there any silver plating or wash on it :huh: pewter would be a very light greay to dark grey in color and brittle looking. any way you could get a couple of clear shots for us to see.

A lot of colonial spoons were pewter, but there must have been some copper ones too. The nubs above the bowl have always made me think it was older than CW and I always thought of them as around 1820's (as a general guess). So it is an old spoon, but how old would be left up to the spoon experts. lol

this appears to be pewter, i used a scanner for the picture, there are no markings on it. If i find my camera i try a picture with that. thanks for lookin. jim

Is there any flaking at the spoon not handle end ?

the spoon seems to be the color grey with no flaking, found it in front of the tot lot at the sylvester sckool in the town you used to livein

thats a great find.. i think pewter is made from tin and brass. or is it tin and copper i forget .. nice relic . cause thats what it is
