Crotal Bell

Hey folks. Someone enlighten me please. I keep seeing these Crotal Bells. What were they used for? sniffy just posted one on the coin forum that is huge! Seems like I remember small bells that looked like this when I was a kid in the 50's. They were used as toy's and decorations. Thanks.

If you have horses with harnesses down there, you may very well find a crotal bell or two. Lots of the horses that pull sleighs and wagons up here have the bells on their harness, and you can hear them coming. Sounds like Santas sleigh. <:
