    Another medieval spur!!!

Hello Diggers, Can you believe it? I found my third medieval spur this year! This one dates to the very late 1400s or 1500s. That makes a total of 6 spurs I have dug now. I spent 2 days cleaning and conserving it and I think it came out pretty good. It is complete with all 3 hook mounts and...

    1600's Knife

Hello diggers, Here is a lovely 1600's clasp knife (folding knife) that I found on my recent trip to Germany. It's amazing to me that the bone scales are still present! The soil in that part of Germany is very gentle to coins and relics. It took me 2 days to get all the rust off and I was...

    Interesting Clothing Hook

Hello friends, On my recent trip to Germany, I dug this lovely pewter clothing hook with lots of silver gilt still on it. This type of hook seems to be only found in southern Germany and they sometimes depict Bible scenes. This one shows Jonah emerging from the whale. It dates to 1600s or 1700s.

    My new BEST coin ever!

Hello friends, I just returned from 9 days detecting in Germany and got an amazing coin on the last morning! It is a 15 Kreuzer dated 1662 and features the bust of Leopold I. He was also known as "hog mouth" because of his severe facial deformity. The coin is the same size as a half dollar...

    Making Acrylic Display Stands

Hello friends, I've been experimenting with making my own acrylic display stands. I bought the supplies on Amazon and just use super glue to connect the pieces. I started with simple displays for my spurs. Each of the acrylic columns has to be cut to a specific height and then a notch cut...

    Fancy Table Knife 1700's

Hello Diggers, Here is a little table knife that one of my friends found while I was in Germany. It was all corroded up and he was going to toss it! I looked at it and decided it was worth saving and boy, am I glad I did! I asked him if I could have it and he said sure. The first picture is...

Greetings friends, As some of you know, I recently traveled to Europe for a detecting holiday. I was lucky that Tim (Ill Digger) was able to go with me. We had an amazing adventure! I have so many finds to show you, but I want to clean them up first. Here is a start though. By far, my best...

My Finds from England Arrived Today!

Hello friends, Last year I received an invitation from our very own Ill Digger (Tim) to go to England for 7 days of metal detecting heaven! Pics of My Treasure Displays

Howdy Diggers, I've been reorganizing my treasures and thought I'd share some pics of my little "museum." I hand-lettered all the little calligraphy signage myself and glued them to colored card stock. I still have several frames to complete and hang on the wall, so this is about 80% of my...

Awesome day detecting with Tony and Don!

Hello diggers, Tony, Don, and I live on opposite sides of the state of Illinois. We decided to meet somewhere in the middle and do some door knocking. We picked a small town (where folks tend to be friendlier) and got several yesses. It was a fun day, and the weather was actually pretty nice...

Found a rare Andrew Jackson button!

Had a great weekend detecting with Tim IllDigger, Digger Don, and Fire Fighter 43 (Jeff). Thank you, Tim, for sharing some great sites with us! This was actually my first good find of the day, but I didn't realize what I had till I got home and cleaned it up. It's an Andrew Jackson...

    Cashier had a fake quarter

Hi Friends, Today I stopped at the store to get some snacks and the cashier tells me that someone had just given her a fake quarter. She shows it to me and mentions it doesn't even sound like a quarter when you drop it on the counter. And to prove her point she drops the coin on the...

    Medieval Spur All Cleaned Up!

Hello Friends, I was going to do electrolysis on the spur from my recent trip to Germany but upon closer examination I could see shiny under the rust. I realized the spur had been "tinned." Electrolysis would probably cook off all the tin coating, so I opted to soak in rust remover instead. I...

Just a couple pics from my recent trip to Germany.

Wow, what a week I had! Good German Beer, good German Food, laughter till midnight with the guys, and detecting all day in ancient forests! I brought back over 10 pounds of iron relics dating to Roman and Medieval times. So much electrolysis to do! Here is a couple pics but it is just a sample.

Back in the USA - A Couple Good Finds

Hello Diggers, Now that I am back in the USA and settled into my new home and job I have been able to get out 3 times detecting. The first 2 hunts were with Don and Noah up in Northern Illinois. The 3rd trip was to Indiana where we were hosted by Tony Two-cent. Why do I always pick the cold...

    My Last Hunt in Germany

Hello Friends, I made the 2-hour drive this weekend to hunt with my German friends and we stumbled across a GREAT location! So much medieval activity! I suspect this area had never been detected either since we were finding so many great targets. The forest was quite dense in places and I had...

    Found my first gun!

Hello friends, What a surprise I got when I dug a huge signal today! My first-ever gun. But not just any gun. An actual Nazi machine gun! It's an StG 44. I'm going to give it to one of my detecting buddies. He is way more interested in the WW2 stuff than I am. From Wikipedia: The StG 44...

    Neat little watch winder (1700s?)

Hi Friends, I found this little watch winder a couple weekends ago. The seal matrix does not have an image on it. I soaked it for a bit in CLR to bring out the silver gilding that survives. I wonder if the owner was a musician. It looks lyre themed to me. How old do you think it is?

Finds from many time periods today

Hello friends, Today I spent 3 hours in one corner of a meadow on the side of a big hill. The area I searched for 3 hours was probably 100' x 100'. The grass is starting to get tall and I really had to push my coil down in spots. My buddy Tom and I found 9 Roman coins between us! We each...
