How I clean my iron relics.

Wait a minute.... you rub your silvers? Don't tell anyone or you might get banned! LOL. I'm like you. I like to leave as much patina as possible unless it makes the coin display poorly. This 1637 coin was so black and I couldn't get it off so I used .000 steel wool to shine up the high...

Have you heard of this preservation wax before?

Hey Diggers, I've been reading some good reviews about this preservation wax. They sell it here in Germany for about $8 so I ordered one. I haven't used it yet but will this weekend on my next finds. I'll post the results to this thread.

First wheat cent of the year!

Hey diggers, I took a day off for my birthday and went treasure hunting. Always the best present to get me! LOL. We hit a patch of woods that is right next to the "medieval woods." There is a Celtic burial mound there also. Finds were slow but steady. I didn't realize I had a wheat cent...

    Electrolysis on Medieval Iron Finds

Hey Diggers, I got my electrolysis tank up and running (if you can call a plastic bucket a tank!). These are my first two attempts and I have lots more to go. The key is circa 1500 to 1600 and the hammer is straight up 1,000 years old (give or take). Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

    First hunt of the year

Hey Diggers, After being sick on and off for almost 3 weeks I finally was able to get out today. It was 42 degrees, very windy and raining so I wore extra layers. We went to a new section of woods near a castle to see if we could find any hot spots or military camp sites. Finds were slow but...

    Historical Cuff Links?

Hi Diggers, A couple weeks ago I found a pair of cuff links at the siege camp. This siege camp was used for at least 4 different sieges that span from the 1630s to the 1730s. The siege dates I have found through my research are 1630s, 1676, 1688, and 1734. The fortress was destroyed after...

Last Silver Coin of 2018 (in the rain)

Hey Diggers, Got lucky and pulled another silver coin today and it's a good one! This gives me 49 for the year. A 1676 French 4 Sols minted in Paris! It was a faint signal at about 8 inches. Was sounding like foil and barely ringing up as a 52 on my XP Deus. Best wishes to everyone for 2019!

2 More Silvers Today at the 1600's Siege Site

Hey Diggers, All our snow from yesterday melted overnight. I headed back to the siege site to see what else I might find. Mostly musket balls the first 4 hours and then 2 silver coins right before I had to leave. The 1637 is a real beauty and definitely one of my favorites. The 1688 was on...

Detecting in the snow at the 1688 siege site

Hey diggers, Woke up to the wonderful white stuff today! Spent 4 hours at the siege site. It's amazing how different the woods look when there is snow! I kept getting turned around and going the wrong way. I found some good keepers today. I got 5 coins with the oldest being 1632. My...

Good 6-hour hunt at the siege site

Hey diggers, It was supposed to rain ALL day so we went prepared and not a single drop of rain fell! LOL. I had a great day. a 23 lb cannon ball from 2 1/2 feet down. 2 old silvers: a 1684 Kreutzer from Germany and a 1574 Douzain from France (King Charles IX). Both coins are in TERRIBLE...

Are You Sick of Me Yet? Another Old Silver Today.

Here's how they come out of the ground Tim. Boiled 2 times in olive oil and lemon juice to clean it.

Are You Sick of Me Yet? Another Old Silver Today.

Hey Friends, I only had about 3 hours to hunt today so I went to the siege camp. I only got one coin today. It's a 1638 Swiss Schilling from Lucerne Canton. Looks like the coin had a hard life before it was lost and it didn't help any that I scuffed it getting it out from under 2 big roots...

3rd Visit to the Siege Camp--another old silver!

Hey diggers, I could hear the rain beating against my windows as I was getting dressed at o-dark-thirty this morning. A quick check of the radar and it looks like it will stop in about an hour or two. I hit the road and headed to my new honey hole, the siege site. 3 major sieges there. 1676...

    Translated the Wax Seal Matrix!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG! My buddy kept looking at the pics I posted on Facebook and realized it ended in POUR VOUS. Of course that means "FOR YOU" in French. I took some more pics with my USB Microscope and I actually figured it out! (with the help of google translate). The matrix says "JE TOUT TU ITE POUR...

    Wax Seal Matrix

Hey Diggers, Yesterday I got a bucket list item at the 1600's siege site. My very first wax seal matrix. It's actually made of tombac and quite heavy. The seal itself appears to be romantic in nature so maybe this one was used by a French soldier writing letters to his wife or sweetheart. I...

    Three Silvers Today: 1676, 1679, & 1695

Hi Friends, I spent 8 1/2 hours detecting non-stop today at the 1600's siege site. I found some amazing relics which I will save for another post. I did also find 3 silver coins, all 1600's! The King Leopold (known as Hog Jowl) is my favorite and in a very high grade. I'm considering getting...

    Found Some Roman Coins

Hi Diggers, The other day I went detecting in an area where Roman coins can be found. Between myself, Russ, and Tom, we found 22 coins in 4 hours. I found 6 but 4 were completely rotted and crumbled into dust once they dried out. Here's the 2 that could be saved. I spent about 40 minutes...

How Did That Coin Get There??

Hey Diggers, We've been finding a lot of coins from the 1600's and 1700's at the siege site. They are generally 8 or 9 inches deep and ring up very faint or choppy. Most of the time they are so faint the XP Deus doesn't show any numbers on the display. The two 1656 French Liards were only a...
