A Rare mid-Winter Hunt - First LC of the Year

Hello fellow detectorists. I had the opportunity to do some rare mid-winter hunting up here in northern Vermont this past weekend. No snow on the ground and much of the woods understory remained unfrozen, something really hard to wrap your mind around up here seeing we average 100" of snow...

Give me your best guess on this thingy

I found this on one of my last hunts of 2015 (late Dec). Made of lead with iron teeth and broken off on one end. Some sort of animal comb? Teeth to an early machine? Site dates from the 1800s and gone before the dawn of the 20th century. Any ideas? Thanks much. John

Can anyone help identify any of this ?

Nice head scratchers. I would think that pic #4 may also be half of a hair barrette. Found one similar earlier this year. John

Thread Showcasing Member's Two Best Finds of 2015

My two favorite finds of 2015 include a G.A.R. veterans medallion/badge (possibly Sons of Veterans) and an early Rutland & Burlington Railroad luggage tag. The G.A.R. badge was found in an old rock wall-lined field (now wooded) about 100 yds from an old cellar hole. At first I thought I'd dug...

Final finds of 2015: buttons, relics, DB Half cent

Very nice assortment of finds. Buttons are definitely the best finds of that collection and a little cleaning will likely bring out some nice detail. I found the exact same button like the one at bottom on your second wide shot (decorative circumferential ring pattern around the middle)...

A Couple of Bells for the Holiday Season

Hi all. I've been fortunate to continue hunting well into the winter season here in northern New England as the insanely mild weather continues. Below are some pictures from my last two hunts (two weeks ago and today). Alas no old coins but some interesting relics nonetheless. Had the...

Bridal rosette and a few other goodies

Had about 3 hours to hunt today, but needed to get back home by early afternoon so couldn't stray far. Hit a familiar hole in my favorite 600 acre park in town, slowing down in the iron by using the small 4" coil and low discrimination on the F2. This is the same hole that coughed up 3 IHs, a...

Several old coins and relics from the road

Had the opportunity to do a little detecting this week so spend 2 hours on Tuesday, then about two hours yesterday hitting near a large cellar hole that to date has yielded few finds. Tried some out of the box thinking, detecting the old road and road embankment in front of and across from the...

Flying Eagle cent and other finds

Hi Dan, It's actually concave with a single pin attachment (see pic). You've had more experience digging these than I so the rosette ID was by best guess. Could it perhaps be something else? Drawer pull etc.? Rang up quite high so a brass composition or something similar seemed logical. By...

Flying Eagle cent and other finds

So had about 3 hours for a hunt today and decided to search for an old school site I'd yet to find. After about a 1/2 mile walk and a bit of searching I found it and went to work. Man, tons of old tin roofing at this site which made my ears ache in all metal mode on the F2, even with the...

Pre-Confederation early Canada token and other relics

Hit the fields again this past Saturday and came away with some decent finds. Cool and breezy so no sweating for this guy. Welcome that feeling but regret the season's coming to an end up here in about 6 weeks. Anyhow, found some early flat buttons, musket balls and other knickknacks...

Field hunt LC caps off a good week for me

So the corn and hay are now being cut in earnest here so it's the time of year to start widening the targets of opportunity in places other than the deep woods. Hit some old fields with a good friend yesterday (Sunday), but on his side (NY) of the Champlain Valley. Lots of history at this site...

Found a new cellar hole - quality not quantity

Hi all, Hit a new cellar hole I discovered on a map earlier this week. Scouted for it Wednesday evening with an approx lat/lon via Google Earth and historic map overlay. This method has worked well for me in the past and it didn't let me down this time. Found it in after a 10 min walk from...

Found this yesterday - Any ideas?

Got this beneath a big old rotten apple tree behind a cellar hole dating in the 1840s - 1930 time frame. Looks perhaps like the back of some sort of clasp that opened. Not sure about that weird rivet thing. Looks as if there could have been two others (now missing). Give me your...

Past few hunts yield a few keepers

Hi all, Been a few weeks since I've posted, or commented with large home projects, family vacation and kids back to middle school/high school etc. Things have begun to settle down a bit now. As a result I've also only had a few times to get out and hunt over the past month or so, but in...

Head scratcher relics from a modern soccer field complex

So I decided to poke around in a portion of some modern soccer fields this past Friday evening in a location where my son and I surprisingly found an early 1800s flat button last year. The site has 15 fields (big complex), the field where I found the button being across the street from an early...

    Any ideas on this medallion?

Found this medallion, or badge earlier this evening. The back is blank and rang up with a high VDI on my F2 (brass or copper most likely). Any ideas? No words, just a pine tree with a farm scene (cow etc). I'm thinking early 20th century, or perhaps late 19th century, but some quick online...

    New site, unexpected finds

So went to my favorite wooded park just up the road this past Friday evening to search for cellar hole #8 that up to that point I had yet to locate on several occasions in 2013/14. Did some meticulous scouting and lo' and behold I finally found it. Best part is it seems a detector has barely hit...

    Funny how fate works sometimes

So was curious to hike an overgrown Class 4 road here in town along which the 1857 map showed an old home site (gone on the 1869 map). After about a 1/2 mile hike I found the site, but alas it had no cellar hole or well...just a heap of stones. It was really off the beaten path (had to hike...

A few more doo-dads to add to the collection

I wonder as well Drew. I found a similar looking piece shown here, showing attendance at an old bicycle festival known as Wheelman's Day back from around the turn of the century. It's from Ohio though. My find likely went to a similar type of badge or pin, with a center attachment though...
