BIG SILVER from one of my favorite parks.

So Final exams are finally over and I am officially on mid-semester break. I headed out to a local park early this morning cause I had a good feeling about the place. It has given up numerous wheat pennies, a buffalo nickel, and 6 silver coins including a Ben Franklin half (my first one)...

    Archaeology vs Metal Detecting

Hi guys, Ridirtdigger here and I just completed my first semester of College at the University of Rhode Island. I took two archaeology courses and was extremely surprised by the amount of bias shown in the courses. The courses basically displayed Archaeologists as modern day heroes who save...

1864 indian head, brass relics, and cellar holes!

This week is finals week at URI but I don't have any exams until next week so this opened up some time to detect (and study of course). On Friday morning I left the house at the crack of dawn to head to an old foundation I had discovered on a hiking trail during the summer. The place was way to...

    Getting permission.

I seem to have a fear of asking permission to detect to strangers. Does anyone else have/had this fear and how did they get over it?

Today and the past weeks hunts at Several Cellars

This past week I went metal detecting at a few cellars. On Tuesday I met up with fellow detectorist and member of the forum Sam. We hit up a few cellar holes in Massachusetts but didn't really find much. Most of the cellars were either hunted out or trashed. I did get what looks like a dandy...

    FINALLY!!! My first 1800's silver!

I've dug a gold coin, a 1694 copper and more but still hadn't gotten a pre 1900 silver coin. That changed today. I decided to take a break from cellar hunting and headed to a park where I had found 6 silver coins this year. Very desolate, nobody around. I picked up a wheat penny and clad and...

Brass pipe, complete toy soldier, and another wacky large cent!

This seems a little to small to be a cane handle

Brass pipe, complete toy soldier, and another wacky large cent!

This is a combination of a short hunt I did yesterday evening after class and a todays hunt. Yesterday I went to a spot which I had hammered with my bounty hunter and ace 350. I had never used the AT pro there so I was anxious to see how much stuff I missed. Right of the bat I get a midtone and...

Cellar hunt on a cold morning

Headed back to the cellar where I got 4 coppers and the 1694 coin. Didn't find much but did find a really old iron skeleton key, a piece of a pewter spoon, a buckle (could anyone id the age), fired musket ball, thing of lead and a bunch of nails and shot gun shells. I think this hole is hunted...

    Veterans day cellar hunt

No school today for me due to Veterans day so I headed into the woods to detect an old farmstead that I last detecting in May. In the spring I found an 1865 indian and an 1864 two cent piece. Today I basically got skunked for the first hour but then hit a certain hot area near one of the cellar...

    Cellar hole ghost

A buddy of my fathers owns a house out in one in a very rural part of Rhode Island. He owns many acres behind the house and being an avid deer hunter, has set up various trail cams. On a late September evening in 2013, a ghostly figure was seen on one camera, appearing to be wearing a heavy...

    Yesterday and Today's short hunts.

Got in about an hour yesterday and an hour today to hit a yard on private property which I had basically hit to death with my Ace 350. This time I took the AT pro and basically dug every non-ferrous signal. Came away with 3 Wheaties, a non date buffalo, and a 1934 Canadian penny. Never found a...

    Shot Largie

Dug this back in March or April. You can read the words United States of America on one side but don't know what year or type. Looks like it has a wreath on the reverse.

First 1600's coin and possible Rosa Americana

Update Well, I tried cleaning the copper up but still couldn't get an ID. I don't know which side is the obverse or reverse so I can't make a guess based on that. All I know is that its old. Sorry guys :bummer:

First 1600's coin and possible Rosa Americana

Headed to the cellar this Saturday. Decided to hunt on the other side of the trail that the cellar was on. Got a midtone signal and pulled out a broken piece to the inside of a colonial buckle. Didn't find much other than shot gun shells for a while but got a bouncy signal going from 50-80 at...

Another trip to the cellar and possibly my oldest coin

This morning I went back to Massachusetts to hit the cellar I recently discovered. The temperature was a lot cooler this time and with partly cloudy conditions, weather would not be a factor. I probably was detecting for around an hour before I get a signal. Its underneath I big fallen tree limb...

Return trip to my new cellar yields a COPPER and other Goodies.

I headed up to Massachusetts today after my college class got out to make a return trip to the cellar. The weather was a lot nicer this time around and it was actually quite warm. I headed into the woods with my AT pro and traveled to the cellar hole. I got a modern wrist watch a little way from...
