    RIP Charles Garrett

I've been away from the forum due to the business of life, so apologies if this is a duplicate post of someone else. Didn't see it posted already though. I just read that Charles Garrett, creator of the Garrett line of metal detectors passed away on April 3rd. For those of you interested, link...

    Returning To Owner

A couple of weeks ago I stopped at a thrift store to see if I could find an old clock or picture frame or something I could turn into a shadowbox to display some of my MD finds. I actually found a shadowbox and it had a display still in it from a baby's birth in 1982. An infant jumper, footprint...

    Beginner's Luck On The Beach

A guy on the Oregon coast tries out his new detector and makes a pretty large find... http://www.kptv.com/story/27427592/treasure-hunter-makes-potentially-historic-discovery-on-oregon-coast?autostart=true

    Old Farm Site Finds

Well I'll be! You guys know your toilet hardware! I even found a similar hardware photo on the web. With this info, I believe I found the house site, or at least very close to it. Now I just have to wait for the snow and ice to go away and will go back and grid search the area. (Although...

    Old Farm Site Finds

When I say old, I mean pacific northwest old, not east coast old! Site is probably between 1910's to 1940's. I found these two items, I believe they're brass, within inches of each other. Also found a small splitting wedge very close to the these, so maybe a woodshed? The L shaped piece if 4"...

    Strangest Find Yet

So I dug up a skull yesterday...well kind of. I suspect this little item has an interesting story. Found it in about 6" of water under about 3" on mud. High school shop project? Halloween is just around the corner for sure.

    My First Silver Ring

I was in a cove of the Columbia River in about 6" of water looking for dropped coins when I uncovered a sterling ring in about 4" of muck. The photo is badly lit so it looks much darker than it really is. The bottom of the ring has a crack all the way through so it'll just go in a display case...

    Pro Pointer on/off button

I've had my pro pointer for about 2 years. Just recently the power button works fine to turn it on but sometimes it won't turn it off. I have to grab the edge of the button and pull it outward to get it shut off. Common problem? Easy fix? Time for a new pointer?

    Cleaning Sterling Ring

Today I had about 90 minutes to hunt a cove of the Columbia River, expecting to find a few coins. I did find some coins but also found a monogrammed ring marked sterling buried in the muck. It's more or less dark and discolored, except one tiny spot that appeared to be wrapped in tape (?)...

Found a Buck, But Not Silver

I was hunting a tributary creek bed of the Columbia River after the water level was lowered. While digging up a coin I sensed a dog walking beside me. When I looked up I saw it wasn't a dog at all, but a buck deer 15 feet from me ambling past. By the time I got my phone out to take a pic he had...

    Interesting Piece

I was out in a local park in a spot that looks like the remains of a small farm orchard. I dug this piece up from about a foot down. I was a rusted hunk, hard to tell even what shape it was. After processing the rust off with apple cider vinegar and electrolysis this emerged. I had a local...

    So Close!

I was on a motorcycle ride in Oregon all weekend. Oregon is basically on fire so motel rooms were hard to find. Saturday night we happened to stop for the night in Sweet Home, Oregon, the first town we could find rooms. We were 1/4 mile from White's factory/headquarters but they were not open on...

    Dallas, TX in October

I'll be in the Dallas / Flower Mound / Lewisville area in the second week of October. Looking for some guidance of good places to hit. I'm hoping I figure a way to have my detector with me.

Found Item Donated To Local Museum

Back in March I located the entire doorknob/lock/latch from an old schoolhouse. Original thread here: http://www.americandetectorist.com/forum/showthread.php?14872-Old-School-Artifact Today I took the latch set to the local museum that has the old photos of the school and donated it to them...

    Unknown Old Building Site

My son found an old building site a few weeks ago. I spoke to a local guy in his 90's who does not remember ever seeing a building there, so that would be pre-20's. Today I took the AT Pro and spent a couple hours there. I recovered lots of cut nails, a few metal scraps, a small buckle, and...

    Small Metal Canisters

While I was detecting an old site from the 30's my son wandered off to see if he could find the old outhouse site because he likes old bottles. Instead he stumbled across an old dump site, probably from the 50's, and probably unrelated to the site I was hunting. He did find some neat old...

    Axe Head Before and After

Up at the old 1930's era sawmill site where I recovered that odd "BB Union Made" button I also found an axe head down about 6-7". Here's a photo of it when I recovered it and again today after electrolysis and boiling oil. It was a fun project! -Karl

    Overalls Button?

I was hunting an old sawmill site that was in operation around 10's to 30's or 40's. I got a hit under a bunch of moss. I removed about 2" of moss and found a concrete block that had been part of the foundation. So I flipped the block out of the hole and this button was staring up at me. At...

    Evapo-Rust vs Apple Cider Vinegar

A few days ago I decided to do an experiment to see what worked better for rust removal - Evapo-Rust or apple cider vinegar. A month ago or so I recovered an old gate hinge that was equally rusted on both ends. I filled one soup can with the Evapo-Rust and the other with the apple cider vinegar...
