Cleaned Pocket Knife (and a question)

I found this pocket knife last week at the former site of a one room schoolhouse. The first photo is the knife when I found it - rusted shut and in poor shape. I soaked it in EvapoRust for 3 days and was able to pry open the blades with pliers. With the blades open I soaked it 2 more days in...

    First Pocket Knife Today

Today I went back to the old schoolhouse site to find silver coinage. As usual it was miserable fighting the brush and I didn't find any coins. However, my first hit of the day was a pocket knife, which was a first for me. Some other odds and ends, probably from when the schoolhouse was used as...

    American Pickers 4/23/14

Did anyone see American Pickers Wednesday night? With the help of a metal detectorist they dug up a 1917 Indian motorcycle buried since the 40's! :shocked05: But really, who among us HASN'T dug up at least one, am I right? Great. Now I've got another thing to add to my metal detecting...

    Wasn't Expecting This...

Today I went out to hunt a little section of woods in the back of a county park beside the Columbia River. I was hoping to find a few relics, but instead I found three current pennies and down about 3 inches a 1990 one-cent piece from Barbados. Was not expecting a coin from such a tiny country...

    Old School Artifact

So this winter I've been doing research on potential sites. Through history books and interviews I found the site of a schoolhouse that was in use from 1924 to circa 1937. It basically was abandoned and fell down. The best part is it's on land I have permission to detect. I've attached photos...

    Closing In!

Today was sunny and (relatively) warm so I went back to the local park to see if I could locate the place where an old farm house once stood. I left the lawn area and went into the woods where I've found some old metal and a 1947 nickel that made me think I was close. Today my first hit after...

    My Practice Year

Well, I've been afflicted with the detecting bug for about a year now. I upgraded from Bounty Hunter to AT Pro in February. So I've been spent the last 10 months figuring out the machine and learning what readings and sounds means what. I've spent most of the time at a local park that used to be...

    Now I Get It!

I've been hearing you folks from the midwest and back east talking about not metal detecting in the winter because of frozen ground. That was usually not a problem here. Chilly and wet, but not frozen cold. Yeah. Never mind. Now I get it after the last week of freezing temperatures. Metal...

Any Ham Operators On the Site?

I'm an amateur (ham) radio operator (call sign K7KWN) and was wondering if anyone else on the site runs a rig and what band(s) you utilize. I run mostly VHF repeaters for search and rescue operations but hold a General license for other bands as well. Anyone else run ham?

    Surprised by a token

I was checking an old swimming cove on the Columbia River because the water is down right now. It was a popular swimming hole in late 70's to mid 80's. Hoping to find a nice ring, but mostly I find clad coins from that time period. Today I found a couple of 30 year old pennies and a costume...

    Business Cards

I'd like to have some business cards with my contact info to hand out regarding metal detecting. Does anyone use them, and what do they look like? I'd like to have the Code of Ethics on the back to help assure folks I'm not one of those guys.

    Interesting First Dig

I tried a new spot in the park yesterday under an old oak tree out away from everything. Lots of iron hits but I knew I was really short on time so I only dug one really strong iron hit and found a round bar I think is off a railroad car. I also found a penny and just threw it in my bag. But...

    Coin Book / Website?

I'm quite dopey when it comes to identifying old coins. I'd like to get a good book with lots of photos of old coins so I can tell not just their year, but also when the series was produced, their composition, rareity, etc. I see lots of coin books for sale, but does anyone have one they would...

    AT Pro Pinpointing

I'm having issues with the pinpointing on the AT Pro. I seem to have the problem when the battery level gets below 4 bars (full). Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a known problem with the Pros or do I need to return it for repairs?

    Worst Weather?

My family was at the Oregon coast for a few days :pirate: . I met up with them on my days off and just happened to have my detector with me. I took it out on the beach even though the wind was blowing 50 MPH from the south and it was raining (sideways). What with the blowing sand and rain >:\ it...

    Emergency Readiness

I didn't see a similar thread so if there is one I missed, I apologize. From what I've seen so far, metal detecting is for the most part worry-free from a safety standpoint. But as a retired deputy sheriff and search and rescue coordinator I wonder if anyone thinks about getting hurt or lost on...

    Little Cup

I went out today to a place where there was a hotel back in the early 1900's. I found a sterling bracelet from a spot where recent Columbia River windsurfers change clothes out in the bushes. Then I got a hit out near the oldest section of the property and found a tiny cup down about 6 in gravel...

    Electrolysis Before/After

Pics of the old axe head I found under 3-4 at an old barn site. As it appeared when I found it, and what it looks like after electrolysis. I'll have to put something on it, it's already collecting flash rust.

    Electrolysis Update. Help?

Sorry if this photo is too big. If someone could tell me how to make the posted photos smaller I'd appreciate it. I built this electrolysis device (or as I call it, my electrolificator). I used Rubbermaid tub with old rebar in each corner (didn't have a metal cutting blade to shorten them)...

    Found in the woods

I was in the woods at a county park and got a surprising hit away from everything. I dug down about 3 and found this. I've no idea what it is. There are some markings on it but I'll have to de-rust it before I can read it. Guesses, educated or otherwise, are welcome.
