July 3rd hunt

Donnie Brian and I finally managed a hunt all together , nice to have them both together . The day was a beautiful breezy day our day was to head back to a couple of cellars

Brian and I did pretty good last outing , it was slow going for a bit but I found a hot spot that netted me a screaming but shallow target ! I was sure it was an aluminum state forest sign but pleasantly surprised to see this A complete looking pocket watch . Later on while taking a lunch break I managed to open the watch and saw this Very close by the watch I also dug up a 5 coin coinspill (4 indian head pennies 1880 to 1889 and a V-Nickel 1891) they probably coincide to the watch's era . Afterwards it was again slow and I only picked up some brass scrap , iron and a few buttons (1 tombac) and 1 that matched Donnie's "honeycomb" gold gilted one that cleaned up pretty well Ill post before and after of that one and this freshly dug officer's Connecticut state seal button from around the Civil War era .

Nice hunt. That honeycomb button is really cool and in great shape! Am I seeing correctly that the watch is full of old newspaper? If so, maybe some careful work could get a date, or at least a good idea.

I think its a page from a book and it was glued or stuck to the back of the watch , someone hollowed out the watch "guts" glued the piece of parchment to the inside back and then the middle was stuffed with some type of fabric (still don't know what kind of cloth it is). Thanks Chris

The Ct. button has no gilt on it whats so ever the button may have been in a fire as that whole side where I found it had a charred stain in the dirt of about every hole I dug. Thanks Donnie

Not 100% positive, but i got a few key words and tracked it to a partial line from the novel "The Hutted Knoll" by J. Fennimore Cooper, 1867.

As I said, I'm not completely sure it's correct since I only had the name Maud and 2 words after it as a reference. There were more hits that dated to the last 30 years or so. That shows there probably are more matches out there that don't pop up on top of a search. Not to mention most newspaper articles won't be found either except by a deep search of specific sites. It would be much better to have more to go on, with more unique phrases.

Al , I personally think the watch was used either as a change purse or as a mourning locket with personal items of the loved one kept inside .
