Buckle piece? Age?

Found this with Rob W over the weekend. It was in with my garbage which I go through very thoroughly. It looks like a piece of a buckle maybe? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Not sure if that is a buckle piece. If I could see some wear in the middle where the prong would have held the leather. After a while they make a mark in the frame. If it is a buckle, it would be a variation of a D buckle, I guess
