Counterfeit silver!

I dug this coin and thought I had a silver quarter but the more I inspected it the more I knew it was a 101_1884.jpg101_1883.jpgfake. The detail is good but the little blobs and the fact its made out of an aluminum alloy told me it wasnt. It is also a couple millimeters bigger than an actual quarter. Its still a cool find though.

Hmmm, very curious indeed. Is it light weight like aluminum?

To me it looks like a real quarter that was in a fire. It seems unlikely that a fake quarter would have reeding on the edge.

Interesting find, either way!

I agree on the fire theory. If the temperature is not high enough to melt silver, it will bubble up like that. But if it is too light for silver then it is a cast fake. I think the date is 1935??

The quarter is very light and it does not have the sound of silver when you drop it on a hard surface. It is dated 1935.

I would weigh it and compare it with a quarter that has similar wear. If it's the same weight it's probably silver and the real McCoy

Coinnut I believe its probably an aluminum mix. Its very light in weight as well.

Here is a picture of a Barber dime that has been exposed to fire. It is very close to the same weight as another non-fired barber dime. So if yours weighs a lot less, then it is counterfeit. But a jeweler and a simple scratch test can lay it to rest. If yours is lighter it is probably counterfeit. Must be some lessons left over from the great depression.
