This AM I hit the site that produced a few 1600s and 1720s coins of late. When I got my coil on this 1817 I KNEW it was a copper. Most times you're hopeful...and you know it's good, but it could be an oxknob or buckle...but this time the sound, numbers, and depth profile (and site) were perfect....you know the coin....the one where you take your headphones off and dig like an archeologist :lol: I was kinda taken aback when I saw the Liberty head...almost 100 yrs newer than anything I've found there, but the drainage there is kind to these coins! Some much cool color on that large dandy too!

Great coin and the button should show off nicely after the stained dirt comes off , congrats Drew
 
Nice digs Drew. You know you are on a good site when digging an 1817 copper feels like you just dug some clad ;) Good shape too. Not a chicken hawk but still a nice button.
 
Congrats on a great coin Drew! It was already in nice shape coming out of the ground. How'd you bring out the detail? Toothpick & olive oil?

Thanks, guys! Dave, you're right, it does look like a thistle. We don't have many of those around. I'll have to clean it up some more. John, that coin was an easy one to clean, I just wet it and put it in the sun. The thin coating peeled off, mostly on its own. Dan taught me that.
 
Funny you mentioned how great sounding that coin was, you knew it was a coin....but the seed of doubt still lingered, oxknob, buckle??? Nice looking coin and button Drew, they both cleaned up real nice. :thumbsup02:.
 
Grats on the copper, Drew. Idk why but the 1817s seem to have a few that pop up in good or better shape. I wonder why a lot of these coppers have a tapered wear to them. Yours has like 160 degrees where the denticles are prevalent. I have a few like that too.
Smh, that'd be a long shot to have that be a GW button AND have that much gilt left on it.
 
That 200-year-old Large Cent is a beauty, Drew! It really cleaned up well. :thumbsup02:

I hope you will let us know if that button cleans up better. :yes:
