    A Silver Sunday

This beautiful New England weather has been holding up so it is hard to resist grabbing the detector to go for a little dirt fishing. I did just that this afternoon by heading to a Connecticut park. Though the park was being actively used I was able to get some detecting done. I managed to find four silver coins, a 1943 Washington quarter, a 1905 Barber dime, and two 1943 mercury dimes.

Here is a mercury dime and the Barber dime, still wrapped in soil.

The mercury dimes do have some fine details to them.

There are about 17 wheat cents in the pile.

    HH!

Sweet digs! Those Mercs really stand out against the quarter and barber dime. It's funny how some silver comes out so shiny and others not so much.

Congrats on the silver Angel. I gotta say thats the first time I have ever saw silver come out of the ground not being bright and shiny. What kind of soil was you hunting in at that park?

Yeah, I've noticed that the barbers and seated do not have the same kind of luster as the mercs do? I think they are all the same 90% make up...What gives?

My guess is that the Barbers and seated coins have been in the ground much longer, exposed to more of the sulfide causing elements for a longer period. But all silver coins will tarnish if the ground where they are found is mostly wet. The Washington quarter and Barber dime were in such an area, whereas the mercury dimes were found at an area that has very good drainage.

I've got a gorgeous 1841 Seated half dime that is completely black!! It's all about water and drainage. If it drains, it's beautiful. if it sits, it's black. Nice hunt Angel and more for the silver pile
