Maybe it's a reach, but I see a fish...I don't think this thing is that old but I'd love to know what the image is supposed to be, if it means anything, and what this object was. Any takers? The dime is for size of course.

I think a fish also you can make out the fins and tail, but you have it upside down, it looks like some kind of snuff box or pill box that would be my guess

I agree with the snuff/pill box idea. The decoration looks Asian, maybe Chinese or Japanese.
