First button found. Need help with ID

I found this button this morning and hope it's old. I found it in SW Ohio on the ground of an old school use to be but a newer school is there now. The older school was built in the late 1800's. Found this about 2-3. I'm very new to detecting and need all the help I can get. I placed the button next a dime for size comparison. Thanks for any help.

Hey Pez, check out Del's Ye old relic hunters guide at the top of this section of the forum. Check out the military button section, you can match that US navy button exactly. Congrats on a sweet find!

PS it's actually in the relic section.

Congrat's ! I agree with Drew . I don't know a lot about the Naval Buttons, but I would pay attention to the number of stars, the fact it's a Two Piece Button and the style of the design . I'm sure if you can't figure it out, someone will help you.

It's the rust and the type of shank that gave it away isn't it? lol

I think this is a match to your button. I have also found one similar to yours that gave me a thrill until I found out it was not military.
