    April 5th Park hunt

    Hey diggers,
I went over to St. Louis to hunt an old park. I'm sure the park has been metal detected many, many times but I always seem to find a couple goodies. The trash in these old parks is fairly dense but it also hides a few good targets. I just creep along real slow and listen for any targets deeper than 6 inches. There weren't a lot of targets but my first coin was a wheat penny so that was a good sign. I ended up with 10 wheat pennies on the day plus one indian cent.

I tried to look for any deeper nickel signals too. Tons of pull tabs, can slaw, and screw caps so shallow nickel signals were pretty much out of the question. Towards the end of the hunt I got a 10-08 at 9 inches on my e-trac. Too deep to be a pull tab plus it had a "nickel" sound to it. I thought it might be a V nickel since they tend to come in a bit lower than buffalo or Jefferson nickels. I cut my plug and scooped out the dirt. Imagine my surprise when I saw a flash of gold in the bottom of the hole! Turned out to be an older looking 14K gold ring. It's interesting because the ring is marked 14K and 735. Since 14K does not equate to 73.5% purity I wonder what it means. Please let me know if you have any ideas about that.

Thanks for looking and HH, Dave.

Yah, I love the old bar tokens too. I'm guessing these date back to the early 1900s.

Great bunch of finds there, Dave! Those gold rings don't turn up too often for us park hunters. That's an awesome find!

I really like the bar token and the Indian Head too, and you also got several Wheaties. That bar token has a wonderful patina on it.

Very nice hunt! I wasn't able to get out this past weekend.
