    Any ideas on this thing?

    Hi folks,

Went to a couple of cellar holes last week and fought the bugs and nettles/briars for sure. Found a few interesting items, including this whatsit from the second home site. Site dates from before 1857...at least it's there on the map, and went through several owners before being abandoned around 1910. So any ideas from the experts out there? I've got several ideas, including some sort of small gas light fixture for a carriage or early model car. All the other items i found there date from the 1800s/turn of the century including some glass jar lids with 1882 patent dates on them (not shown). Just a curious little item so I kept it. Apologies in advance for the slight blurriness on the first image.
