One Weird Wheat

Up at dawn for a short hunt. Anyone know why that wheat was sparkling when I picked the crud off? It was the only coin in the hole and was five inches deep. The other wheat is five years newer and in the normal condition.
I never dig mercury dimes, and this one looks perfect Happy Sunday!

It is odd looking for sure, I have dug some that look real good but mostly they are recent drops and are not that deep.

I'd say it got coated with something that protected from the dirt, I dug a beautiful gilted button once that looked like it got dropped in some red paint I put paint remover on it and it turned out fantastic.

Nice finds ya got there and I'd say the wheat was probably coated with something that protected it from the dirt. I once dug a gilted button that got spilled in paint and discarded, paint remover made the button look like brand new.

I'd agree with giant056 in that it was coated with something when it was dropped. Perhaps something mildly acidic 'cause it looks similar to when you clean and old wheatie with ketchup/vinegar etc. Perhaps the person had something on their hands or in their pocket. I once found some clad pennies in the pocket of an old coat we were giving to Goodwill. They had gotten coated in some sort of melted goombah...likely an old cough drop or piece of candy that had melted at some point. Really gross and I threw them out, but some sort of thing like that could possibly explain it. On the other hand, maybe it was just the clump of dirt it was lying in.

Nice finds Drew. Was that wheat in a clay/soil mix? My guess is lack of oxygen kept the patina at bay.
