Indian Head, Dime Trifecta, Silver Quarter and a neat Trade Token July 20, 2014

Today I hunted an old park in a small town on the Illinois River. I'm not sure why, but they had removed the top 6" of turf from most of the park. I asked a young boy why they had been digging up the park and he said they had been digging for Indian artifacts. (?!)

The conditions made for easy digging and I was finding old coins nearly on the surface. The sandy soil is very kind to the coins as well. It was a fun day.

I ended up with an 1888 Indian Head Cent, 20 Wheat Cents, an extremely worn 1901 Barber Dime, a nice 1923 Mercury Dime, a 1947-D Roosevelt and a 1959-D Washington. I also found a very large trade token.

Here are all of today's finds:

    And here are the keepers:

Here is the large trade token:

I did eyeball some pieces of flint on the surface. Thousands of those small shells are lying on the surface as well.

It was another perfect day weather-wise. I had a lot of fun. Thanks for looking and happy hunting!

It looks like you found another honey hole. And they did half the digging for you. How cool is that.

Very nice hunt Tony. I can't believe how worn that Barber dime is. Another couple of years and it would have been blank. Congrats on a nice hunt and some nice finds.

Great looking toke. The thought of seeing grass removed makes the imagination fly. Glad you had a chance to detect, who knows how long it will be bare ground!

Super hunt Tony. How much longer you figure you have to hunt the area? Definitely several return trips are in your future. HH

I'm not sure if I will be going back to this park or not, as it is about 2 1/2 hours away from me. If I was finding seated coins it would be a no brainer, but that's a long way to go to find coins that were mostly dropped in the 1940s and 1950s.

Meanwhile, I found a few more oldies at the school after work tonight:

Yet another great hunt Tony. That Barber has to be the smoothest one I've ever seen. Fantastic pile of keepers, to bad the park is so far away. Did you do a video????

Well, the token should give you a pretty good clue.
