Steve and I got out for a hunt today at a colonial home site. Dug this coin or button at 7 inches down, VDI 75-80.
Any clue to what it is?

the one side does remind me of a button but i also see no shank area . overall it reminds me of a lead bail seal with the numbers on both sides. Mike is it flat on both sides like a button or does it have a slight round or convex side or sides to it ??

Very interesting find. You may have to send a picture to one of the Treasure magazine "Whatsit" departments. I'm leaning towards some sort of privately minted coin such as a Colonial store, company coin or maybe even a coal mine coin. Please let us know if you ever solve the mystery!

I don't know what it is but I'm guessing it's not a coin or button. What it is I don't know though. Great piece for sure Mike

The pic almost looks like the lighting plays tricks on you. All I can provide is that it appears to have 'S.D' and '4'. The fact that the edges have a layer missing but it is still covered through the center of the item, it most likely isnt a button. As well, the fact there is much higher copper content in brass compared to the copper used in zinc pennies, and the size of it, I am sure it would be brass and ring up like a full copper penny.
Well Mike, looks like you're gonna have to do some more cleaning to uncover some detail.
Having fun is what it is all about!
