Coin Toss?

I had about 90 minutes yesterday to hit a park before dark. I decided to try a spot popular for family reunions and such. My first two hits were clad, then I pulled up a 1946 wheatie. Might be more oldies there, right? Suddenly I just hit coin after coin, none more than 1" down. I guess some parent just tossed a couple of handfuls of coins into the grass to keep the kids quiet and entertained for a few hours. Finally I quit due to darkness, but the hits were still coming. Nothing older than the 70's, but that 1946 kept me there looking.

Funny how that works sometimes. New park I have been hitting lately has "pockets" of coins like that-can't go 6 inches without a hit and could probably spend hours picking out shallow clad pennies. But, finding that wheatie shows promise of older stuff being found, unless it's just an incidental like getting a wheatie as change from the store. GL&HH!

That's exactly what I'm afraid of. On the other hand, if I power through all the clad I might find an old silver the same way. What I was really looking for was a ring or pendant or such. I'll go back when I have more time.

A few years back my son and I were detecting a half mile into the woods on private property (permission). My son yells he has a coin spill. After five min I come over to help him. We kept pulling clad until we got to 100 and stopped with more still in the hole. The owner didn't put them there and owned the property in the 90s when the coins were put there.

Here's the coin spill that got me hooked on metal detecting a few years ago. In a campground; all nickels and pennies. All about 1-3" down. Why someone had so many small value coins is a mystery. This photo was just the first day. I went back and uncovered over 200 coins altogether. Good thing it was fun because it sure didn't pay well!

Holy Cow that's a big coin spill!! My biggest was 63 clad coins. A spot like that is a great place to take young'uns.

I always tell myself that 1 old coin is a fluke and 2 is a pattern. I would do the same thing and keep pounding for the 2nd wheat. Gas money is always good. good finds WD
