Need Some help with this Buckle

I dug this buckle today at an 1890s house. I have no idea what kind of buckle it is or what it says. I think I see the date 1870 on it, but I'm not sure. Has any one ever seen one like this?

It looks like 1870/6, maybe try some steel wool on it under water .Is it brass?

Definitely not brass. I just realized what I thought is the front is actually probably the back.

It's a horse tackle buckle but other than that I don't know. Cool find though.

Sure? The way the tapered edges around belt hole makes it look like the design/date side was front, even tho it would be covered by the leather.
