Wife does some great research and I bag my first large copper

My wife has been bugging me for the past couple of weeks to check out a spot she researched on the web. She used historic aerials.com to locate some buildings that were abandoned around 1950 and are now in wooded parkland. We drove to the park late this morning and hiked to the general location. After some searching, we located an old road that was lined with huge pine trees on either side. After some more searching we located a few old foundations. They were concrete but that old kind of concrete with stones in it. I guess them to be turn of the century.

    Pic of one...

My first find was a large copper coin! I have done every trick to try and make out what kind it is but haven't had any luck yet. It is very worn. Maybe you guys can see better than me. It looks to have a man's bust rather than the woman you find on the large cents.

    Also found a 23' Merc and a 1917 wheatie...

and an Army Chemical Corps pin fully intact with a lot of the original gold patina...

An old copper button It's not big but it's thick and heavy.

I had all the luck today but the wife gets the credit for finding the spot. After getting back home and checking the old aerial pics, we realized that we found less than half of the ruins that should be in the area. Looks like we have our weekends planned for a while.

Very nice finds, and great research!

That last item appears to be a small leaded weight the ladies used to add to their skirt hem to keep the skirt down.

hey Bill your wife did find a great spot ( better hold onto her ,she's a keeper thumbsup01) your coin is a King George II halfpenny ( young head variety 1729 to 1739) so there was definately older activity around that area .keep working that spot there bound to be more goodies. heres a couple of pictures of what the coin might of looked like new .

    Thanks Del!

Never would have thought that my first large copper would be that old!

I should take the Wife out to dinner.

Now that I know where the date is, I was able to make out that the last digit is a 2. So, the date must be 1732.
