What a wonderful two days of detecting for the Bell-Two Crew on Friday and Saturday! On Friday I went out to meet my friend Bill who needed some help finding sites on a couple of his permission fields, Diane decided she needed to get some things done around the house so I went by myself. The first site was a bit off of where the old map said it would be but close enough, I found it after a bit of expanding the search area. My first good find was an old hammer head on top of the ground which I will clean up more and put a new handle on. My first dig resulted in a nice small Conestoga Bell which is always a nice find. Bill opened up the coin finds with an 1861 Fatty Indian followed quickly by a nice 1865 Indian. Some buttons were nice but I dug so many shotgun head stamps hoping for my Fatty Indian which at last came an 1863 in good shape. We then moved on to another site in an adjacent field and this time the mapmaker was dead on, the high corn stubble and the large amount of chaff made hunting difficult and the only good find I had was a thimble which at first I thought might be silver but turns out to be aluminum.
Saturday we were joined by our friend Doug, and constant digging partner and his son Malachi. Our first stop was the Barrel field where we had done so well last Monday, Diane started out the good finds with an 1891 Indian Head. Malachi then found the next coin…a 1952-D Wheatie…..obvious farmer drop since everything else found here is of a much earlier date! He also found a nice Rein’s guide a first for him. I then scored next with an 1890 Indian; I also found a missing piece to a large brass piece I had found earlier in the week. We were detecting and finding small items when Doug called to me and pointed to Diane saying “Large Cent” she was smiling and giving the hand signal for a Large Cent and what a Large Cent it is! We went over and she was pointing at the green disc on top of the ground and when I examined it I was stunned…it was an 1806 Draped Bust Large Cent! We don’t find many Draped Busts in this part of Ohio but to find one on top of the ground amazing! We continued to detect and I found a nice Livery Tag and some other items. We decided to go to another field to see if we could find the site, which we did easily. Diane found the first good target again a large Conestoga Bell. Malachi then found a brass valve fitting and then a very cool old lock! My only good find here was a partial head badge from a bicycle. It was from the Columbus Bicycle Co. in Columbus Ohio…this company was in business from 1895 to 1898. Doug then called out “Large Cent” and again it was a good one…yes another Draped Bust! This one is an N/D but still a great find. We were headed back to the car when Doug scored a nice 1865 Indian Head…a great way to finish an awesome day!
