Surprise Coin at the Medieval Woods Today!

Hey Diggers,
I was able to get in about 3 hours of detecting this morning so I headed to the Medieval woods where I have done so well lately. Not a lot of signals but I did get a few coins and musket balls. Big surprise was a giant Roman coin only 4 inches deep! It has a very fragile patina so I only cleaned it enough to see the details and then stopped. I don't yet have an ID on it and the back is pretty much worn smooth. I also found a flint pad to a flintlock rifle (too bad the flint was missing). You can still see the marks where it was tightened into the cock! I also found a silver coin--a very nice looking 1840 6 Kreuzer from the German State of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Here's some pics. Wow, more great finds! That Roman coin does look really fragile. Good luck getting an ID on it.

Just got a positive ID on the Roman coin. It is Emperor Trajan and was minted AD 98 - 117! It is a bronze "As." (I never even heard of an As before! Apparently 4 Asses equals a Sestertius--seriously!)

I've heard of those. They have a display at the museum along with the chart showing the value conversions. I'll see if I can get a pic of it next time I'm there.

More nice finds Dave, and nice you could get a quick ID on the Roman coin! As many musket balls as you find in your area, it seems folks were either in near continuous battle, hunting or taking pot shots at one another nearly continuously! BTW, also love the old spun tombac. Always puts a smile on my face when I see one pop to the surface.
