Yeah I'm with Tony. An escutcheon for a drawer or cabinet knob.
Oldest find: 5,000 year old copper spearhead

One other thing that comes to mind is it could be a cane cap somewhat like in the photo below and formed to the contour.

Thanks everyone! The only reason I didn't think drawer pull was because its concave, and the wrong way for a cane tip. But maybe it was just bent to look concave. Thanks!

I vote escutcheon too. Not that I find a lot of mid-1800s items, but the escutcheons I have found on a few permissions in the way past had the concave look. All of the ones I found were very heavy too.
