    1st Hunt With The Manticore

Took today off from work and went back to my button house site that has given up over 100+ buttons, several coppers and other items I can't remember right now.

It took some time to get used to the sounds as well as what the display was telling me. I still have a lot to learn but was nice to get outside on this wonderful day.

I was in AT General with Sensitivity at 20-23, Threshold at 0. I was getting a lot of chatter & discovered that the Ferous Volume was set to 8, so turned it to 0.

The hunt started off with me digging a lot of shotgun headstamps, which was good as I was able to understand what the target ID # was but I really wanted to dig better targets. It's tough to get used to a new machine especially as I've been swinging my V for 10 years now.

I was finally rewarded after several hours with a nice signal in the middle of the screen & it had a circular shape on the target trace. Dug down and pulled the very small button, yes!

A couple of swings later got another good target, dug down & pulled the other button, yes!

Then a couple of swings later got another good target reading 85, if I remember correctly. This was way down I'd say at least 7-8". As we had a lot of rain the hole was slowly filling up with water, but I saw the circle shaped object and brought it to the surface. I figured a dandy button but was surprised when I wiped the mud off it to see the shield and knew I had scored a NJ copper, yea baby now we're talkin! After cleaning it saw it's 1786.

By that time, it had been a long day so swung on my way back to my backpack & score the musket ball.

The Manticore is a very powerful machine & is very sensitive. I really like how lite it is compared to the V, as my shoulders & arm was not sore & tired as it would have been.

Looking forward to my next outing with my new machine.

Thats been such a great site for you! I can't believe you're still digging shotgun shells, everyone could be a button. The ground is saturated. Nice score on the copper...bucketlister?

    Thanks guys!

Drew, I've dug NJs before but it's been a long time and to top it off it's gotta be the deepest coin I've ever dug.

Those are some great finds for a new machine. I keep hearing differing opinions about the Manticore, some people hate it and others are figuring it out and loving it. I really like my CTX, so not sure about upgrading. Crazy how your deepest coin was only 7-8" since this is really my average digging depth in my area. When hunting parks, anything less than maybe 6" is 99.9% going to be current coinage or can slaw. My deepest coin with a VLF machine was a large cent I got from around 24" deep using the CTX, 17" coil and max sensitivity. My actual deepest coin was beach hunting in Florida with my GPX4800 PI machine and ultra sensitive 15" mono coil where I dug a penny at over 4 feet.
    Equipment:
Minelab: CTX 3030, GPX 4800, X-Terra 705. Whites TDI SL.

    2024: Silver 1, Gold 0
Best finds: 28 silver dime spill, 1800s Dutch customs seal.
Oldest/best coins: Late 1700's Chinese Cash Coin, 1837 Upper Canada large cent, 1877 Seated Dime
Oldest Relic find: 1800 Sailors Luck token

Congrats on the new machine. I think it's a good choice. I've had mine for a while now and have done well with it here and the UK. I basically hunt it like a CTX same type of settings.
Good Luck with it. Get out there.

I run it in AT with the iron on and some sound settings to help with Iron but pretty basic. The one thing that I have learned about it is that the deep stuff that says iron isn't always.
